Glazed Orange Doughnuts

Ingredients
  • 3½ cups of all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening, melted
  • ¾ cup of milk
  • 4-5 tablespoons of orange zest
  • 1 egg
  • Packet of rapid rise instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ cup warm water (about 105°F)
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
  1. In small bowl combine warm water, yeast and 1 tsp sugar to proof.
  2. Set aside for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. In large bowl, add flour, salt, sugar and baking powder and whisk together to evenly combine.
  4. Add melted shortening, milk, egg and proofed yeast mixture and stir.
  5. Fold in the orange zest.
  6. On floured surface, roll out a portion of the dough to punch out forms.
  7. Set aside formed doughnuts floured plate.
  8. In a small pan, heat oil to 300 - 325°F.
  9. Once heated, place doughnut ring into the oil.
  10. Allow to cook 1-2 minutes per side until dark golden.
  11. Set cooked doughnuts on paper towel lined plate or rack to drain excess oil.
  12. Adjust heat as necessary as you proceed.
  13. Mix together powdered sugar with milk to make glaze.
  14. Add ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract or a little cocoa powder to flavor the glaze if desired.
  15. Dip doughnuts into glaze to cover both sides.
  16. Allow excess to drip off, then put on rack or plate to set.
