It’s London, and you have better things to do than to spend an afternoon in a stuffy museum right? Well, you may want to reconsider this one. Admission is free and there are definitely worthwhile artifacts to see at the British History Museum. Plus, it strengthens the feeling of being somewhere old and traditional.

Egyptian Artifacts

Will I ever get to go to Egypt? Maybe, maybe not. But now I’ve seen a ton of Egyptian artifacts and have a better appreciation for their artistry.

Easter Island Statue

I am even less likely to ever make it to Easter Island, but the monolithic moai sculptures the island is famous for have long fascinated me. The specimen at the British Museum is smaller than most, but no less impressive considering it was sculpted between 1250 and 1500 CE. If only I had the talents of a ventriloquist – what fun to project speech from this curious fellow to other museum patrons. Snicker.

Miniature Pieces

Despite the awe-inspiring large artifacts throughout the museum, I was most impressed by the very smallest pieces. The skull pictured below was no larger than a walnut. And, this scenic view was carved inside a walnut. What kind of craftsmanship and talent is required to accomplish these feats?

In conclusion, the museum is open daily.  Broaden your knowledge by participating in one of many talks and tours given frequently throughout the day. And again, admission is free!  As the Chinese Proverb goes: “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere”.
